Description

Trauma and learners - a strategies workshop

- Kidnapped children, hijackings, armed robberies, sexual abuse, xenophobia, shops burned, violence -

The media has been reporting on horror stories with even greater intensity than usual. Add to this friendships that are lost as parents emigrate and financial difficulties as jobs are lost.

What are the sort of questions covered in this workshop?

How does the educator, parent, care-giver reassure children? How does one handle confidences of sexual abuse? To whom must it be reported and how can the child be helped? How do we create safety when it sometimes feels so overwhelming and there appears to be no safety? How do we help ourselves to cope in the midst of all the chaos?

Two SACE accredited topics, each with 5 CPTD points are combined for educators to earn 10 CPTD points from this workshop. These are 'Manage the effects of trauma' and 'When children say they have been sexually abused' (and the do's and dont's).  Signed attendance registers for each topic are sent in to SACE.

The presenters for the above topics are respectively Minette and Christa and the workshop leader is Elaine. They will combine their expertise to guide you in your particular situation. You will learn to identify symptoms of trauma and understand options. This workshop is aimed at educators, parents and care-givers.

The strength of this workshop is that we address traumatic symptoms in the current societal context. It also aims to guide educators, parents and caregivers in communicating with children and with each other in respect of when to refer and what actions to be taken. This workshop would be relevant to all educators from preschool through to high school.
